I was commissioned to design and build a sign for Nosh. The look was to be industrial and something that went with the current style of the decor. I chose the perforated aluminum because of the steel everywhere, however, the aluminum would be much lighter (especially important because the sign would be hung) and have the same look. The Edison bulbs were also found throughout the restaurant, but I sourced 7" tube style bulbs to use which were great to use for lettering. I made the sign initially with 60 watt bulbs but those proved to throw off just too much heat. I switched to 30 watts, a total of 33 of them, and they gave off a warm glow and were still bright enough to see in the day time through the windows. The real magic is witnessing at night, however.
I was asked to design a "swirly cloud" type of metal art installation for Empire Chinese Kitchen. After taking photos of the room in day time light, evening light, and getting extensive measurements of wall-space, where the windows were, I then set to work.
The metal panels were 5'x8', so I needed my design to be well-mapped out for the installers to put together. After designing the piece in illustrator, I broke it apart to put it on art boards that could be scaled perfectly. The metal fabrication sits 1.5" from the wall and is painted in a shade of red that complements the cream-walls, the dark slate blue wainscotting and is beautiful in both natural day light and the evening incandescent lighting.
