I had the opportunity to design and build the sign for Nosh Kitchen Bar in Portland, Maine at the corner of Congress and Oak Streets. I happen to live a block away and found myself going there for dinner or just a drink on at least a weekly basis. The bacon dusted fries and the fried pickles are amazing. They wanted something with an industrial look, something that fit with the current decor as well. Instead of perforated steel, I went with aluminum, it's lighter and wouldn't rust, so it could be hung in the window easier.The Edison bulbs were also found throughout the restaurant, but I sourced 7" tube style bulbs to use which were great to use for lettering. I bought millions of feet of wire, piles of nuts and bolts, tin snips, and got to work. I made the sign initially with 60 watt bulbs but those proved to throw off just too much heat. I switched to 30 watts, a total of 33 of them, and they gave off a warm glow and were still bright enough to see in the day time through the windows. The real magic is witnessing at night, however. Now my boyfriend would rather not make another trip to the hardware store for the rest of his life.
